Learners want a say
Adult
Learner's Forum (in Edinburgh) or ALF(iE) is an independent
forum for adult learners. ALF
welcomes the Enterprise and Lifelong Learning Committee's
report on lifelong learning. It is without doubt a significant
contribution to the debate surrounding the role of education
in the future development of Scottish society. It is estimated
that there are hundreds of thousands of adult students across
Scotland investing their time and money in their personal
and community's future development. It's time they had a
say in the future of their learning!
Learners
as Partners
The development
of a coherent lifelong strategy is long overdue better
co-operation between providers is crucial to the development
of transparent systems of communication and progression
for students.
Of equal importance is the development of better
co-operation between providers and learners.
It would improve communication and coherence if learners
were involved at an inter-agency level offering views on
issues of communication and progression on an on-going basis
Few educational institutions across Scotland have established
learners' forums. Forums could advise on a range of issues
like progression and could provide a permanent sounding
board for improvement. We need to stop
treating learners like passive consumers of a product and
more like partners in a common educational endeavour.
