Our Organisation
A constitution, which gives us charitable status.
A database of members, voluntary organisations,
colleges, community education, community centres.
Applied for funding to various organisations.
Received lottery funding for a new computer and
to help fund our 2001 conference.
Elected a management committee at our first AGM.
ALFiE has a voluntary Management Committee and is run
by volunteers with support from a few Adult Learning
workers employed by various organisations. It has about
120 members from a wide range of mainly community based
adult learning groups and projects. It is a Scottish
Charity, No. 030473.
Representation
A Bill of Rights for Adult Learners. 10,000
printed for members, etc.
ALFiE participated in Community Education Review
of Adult Education in Edinburgh.
ALFiE has been represented at other seminars
and meetings.
ALFiE is represented on other groups (e.g. WEA,
Learning Links Scotland, Community Learning Plans)
We are part of the group Learning Links Edinburgh
(A group of voluntary organisations)
We were invited to speak about Learners Forum
to providers in London at a NIACE conference.
We were asked to another NIACE conference in
London.
We were invited to talk about Adult Learners'
Forums at the Stirling Area Local Learning Partnership.
Attended a seminar about IT.
We have now been asked to Newcastle and North
Lanarkshire to talk about Forums
Information
5000 leaflets for joining ALFiE were sent out
to all Edinburgh organisations who provide adult education.
Newsletters were sent to all members and adult
learners organisations.
Researched into the barriers that adults face
going back to higher education.
Research done on Adult Literacy and Numeracy.
A written report of research called "Access
and Power: Adults Returning to Higher and Further Education."
Networking
Supported the establishment of local Adult Learners
Forum (e.g. Craigmillar)
A seminar to discuss and produce a response to
the Community Education Review.
A successful conference in May 2001 with Learners,
Providers and MSPs and another in 2002 about Adult Literacies.
Some committee members attended a project to
learn about the Scottish Parliament.
We ran a workshop in Dundee about Adult Learners
Forums.
Funding
ALFiE has no secure funding. The City of Edinburgh Council's
Community Education Department has provided financial
support (£1000 for the past few years) for stationery,
publicity, accessibility aids, etc. A small grant was
received from the lottery for a conference in 2001 and
a computer. Support from organisations is mainly in
kind.
